Global warming is caused by emission of greenhouse gases, 72% is caused by CO2 from automobiles, power plants and industries. Indoor CO2 concentration can vary from 500-600ppm and can even exceed 1000ppm in crowded indoor places, such as classrooms, conference hall. High level of CO2 can cause drowsiness, headaches and loss of attention. NAMI’s microalgae technology, with a high removal performance of up to 90% of inlet CO2, has been incorporated into green walls in a joint collaboration with Greentins Technology Limited. Microalgae are aquatic species which can carry out photosynthesis and absorb CO2 to release O2. Microalgae green wall serve to provide aesthetics in addition to the air purification in both indoor and outdoor environments.
Nano and Advanced Materials Institute Limited (NAMI), established in 2006, was designated by the Innovation and Technology Commission as a Research and Development Centre for nanotechnology and advanced materials. NAMI’s R&D activities focus on five market sectors: energy, electronics, construction, environmental and healthcare. NAMI undertakes and provides support for market-oriented research in nanotechnology and advanced materials, and strives for commercialization of the technologies to promote the economic growth of Hong Kong as a knowledge-based economy.
